Immigration to France

The visa requirements in France are split into two categories – citizens from the EU/EEA/Switzerland and non-EU/EEA citizens.
Citizens from the EU/EEA/Switzerland don’t need a visa to enter France. All other nationalities do require a visa, either short stay or long stay. (Other requirements are valid for the overseas territories)

Citizens from the EU/EEA/Switzerland, who want to live and work in France, don’t need to apply for a residence or work permit. However a “Carte de Séjour” will simplify your life in France.

All other citizens have to apply for a short or long stay visa. A short stay visa will allow you to stay in France for a maximum of 90 days during a period of 6 months.

If you want to stay longer than 3 months you will need a “Titre de Séjour”. Different from the visa, you only can apply for a residence permit in France at the Préfecture de Police or Sous-préfecture at the Sevices des étrangers.

What you need for a residence permit depends on the kind of residence permit. In general you will need the following documents:

  • Original and copy of your passport (with valid visa if needed)
  • Birth certificate
  • Original and copy of your residence in France (eg: rental agreement, electricity bill)

  • For students: certificate of matriculation from the French university
  • Medical report issued by the OMI (Office des Migrations Internationales) or an OMI accepted institution or doctor
