About Ireland

As with many countries, immigration in Ireland focusses priority on job offers and availability of specific skills and where there may be shortages in the country’s workforce. The good news for citizens from the European Economic Area is that they do not need to have a special type of permit if they wish to begin work in Ireland.

This is different for people arriving from outside the EEA citizens (note that Bulgaria and Romania have other requirements). You should always check with your local embassy to confirm the exact details that relate to your particular circumstances in regards to obtaining a visa and/or work permit for Ireland.

There are several ways to immigrate to Ireland. The Green Card Permit Scheme helps employers to a particular person which allows this person to start working in Ireland for the mentioned company. If the Green card is not available, there is also a Work Permit available in certain circumstances, generally with higher paying salary positions.

Ireland also makes available an intra-Company Transfer option which allows transfers trainees or managers from international offices to their Irish branch. There is also a Spouse option for people who are married (or legally together with) a work permit holder and means that they don’t need to meet any special labor or market need tests. Third Level Graduate Scheme is an option for non EEA students, who have acquired their primary, masters or doctorate degree at an Irish third level educational institution, to stay in Ireland for 6 month after the receipt of their examination results.

Working and living in Ireland
As an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen you will have the same chances to a job offer as every other applicant. It is advisable to have a job offer and a working permit, if needed, as well as an appropriate accommodation in advance of your removal.

You can feel free to apply for jobs in the Irish public sector, such as the Irish army or the Irish police force, but not the Irish diplomatic service.

The taxes that are deducted from your salary depend on your residential status in Ireland. The specific definition of the taxes depends on the days you are staying in Ireland and is written in the tax declaration. You will be a resident in Ireland for particular taxes if:

  • You are staying for 183 days or more per tax year
  • You are staying 280 days or more per two tax years

Finding accommodation in Ireland
Finding accommodation in Ireland is the same as in most other countries. You can look for ads in the newspaper or take a look on some accommodation websites. Usually rent is paid per month in advance, and a deposit of one to two months is usually required.

The prices of Irish accommodation vary and depends on the region where you wish to live. The prices in Dublin are very high. Following, is an indication of average monthly prices in 2011:

  • Three bedroom house – €1,200
  • Single room sharing house – €350

Rent a rent book
In Ireland you are entitled by law to rent a rent book. The rent book consists of information about the tenant as well as of the rental payments. It should contain the following information:

  • The address
  • The landlords name and address or the landlord’s agent
  • Your name
  • Date when the tenancy started
  • Amount of deposit and if it is paid already
  • Amount of rent and the date it has to be paid
  • Details of other payments of services
  • Statement of the basic right and duties
  • List of furniture and appliances
