The capital and largest city is Des Moines, with a population of just over 200,000 residents.

Climate of Iowa
The state of Iowa sits in the humid sub continental area, which means that it experiences very warm summers, very cold winters and relatively wet spring seasons. It averages 166 days of sunshine and receives around 34 inches (88cm) of rain per year.

The average temperatures during the warmer summer months are around 86°F (30°C), whereas the winter average is closer to 10°F (-4°C). The snowfall average for the year is around 30 inches (76cm) and falls mostly in December and January. Temperatures and conditions vary across the state, and are affected.

Cost of living in Iowa
The state taxation system of Iowa has nine brackets. Retail sales tax is 5% with exemptions made on basic grocery items and prescription drugs. There are state excise taxes on motor fuel, tobacco, insurance and a number of other items. Iowa has an estate tax with a maximum of up to 15%. The median household income is around $48,000, which is just under the national number. However, the median house cost in Iowa is $118,000 which is also under the national number. New home prices are averaging at around $180,000.

As with any property numbers, the value of real estate purchases are always dependent upon the exact location and type of accommodation you choose. As a general rule, property that is closer to the major cities is more expensive. The total price is also greatly affected by the age and condition of the dwelling, as well as its proximity to public facilities such as transport, parks and other recreational facilities.

However, if you are planning to stay for longer than that or you think that your situation may change during your 90 days stay, then you should arrange to obtain a US Visa before travelling.

In order to obtain a Visa, there are a number of different types on offer. Depending upon your situation, this will dictate which one you need to apply for.

You will need to have the following documents readily available for the processing of your visa application:

  • Passport – valid for at least 60 days beyond the expiry date of the immigrant visa
  • Photographs – 2 passport approved format photos
  • Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration (DS-230 Part I & II)
  • Civil documents – these include birth and marriage certificates, etc
  • Financial support – proof that you can support yourself financially
  • Medical forms – confirming medical check and vaccinations

Canadian and Mexican passport holders are subject to a different set of rules and regulations. As with all international travel, it is important that you check with your local authorities for the exact visa requirements for your personal situation in relation to arriving in the USA.
